Holstee Manifesto

January 25, 2012

Life has been a bit crazy for me lately…(8 week old twins and a toddler:). Shall I say more. It’s always nice to have reminders about the things that are important. That is how I discovered this manifesto poster by Holstee. I eagerly looked up the company and fell in love their story and products. Two brothers, along with a business partner started the company without a business plan in mind but instead created a mantra “This is your LIFE”, which has been seen over 50,000,000 times!

Another meaningful product that caught my attention is Holstee’s Upcycled Wallet. Working with an NGO in India, Holstee came up with a ‘no two alike’ wallet made from recycled plastic bags and newspapers collected from the streets of Delhi.

Check out this video based upon the Manifesto. This video will be part of my new morning routine! Sometimes certain words are so encouraging. Life is all about that. Thank you HOLSTEE.

Sweet Sound ~ Tara Priya

September 23, 2011

Amy Winehouse may not be present, but her voice and style has continued to inspire other singers to create soulful music. Which allows me to introduce Tara Priya. This awesome retro singer/songwriter gal has subtle nuances from Amy Winehouse, Adele, Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald. What do you think?

Check out her song “Rollin’”, which won the 18th Annual Billboard Song Awards. For SoCaler’s, Tara has a show October 3rd at The Mint in LA.

March 14, 2011

By now, I think you all know how amazing I think Catherine over at Rikshaw Design is, how she’s perfected the technique of block printing to create a gorgeous fresh bohemian style clothing and bedding line for all ages. I love the tuxedo style kurtus…..and the taj print is my all time favorite! Here’s a look at Rikshaw’s new spring clothing line…

Sweet Sounds ~ Bhi Bhiman

February 8, 2011

If you’re a fan of folk music, you MUST hear Bhi Bhiman, a Sri Lankan American singer-songwriter from the Bay Area. His voice is quite catchy and captivating. I love it! He writes about politics, pop culture, and his daily ramblings – combining it all with a great sense of humor.

P.S. San Franciscans – Bhi will be playing at Fillmore Lounge (Feb 17th) and Revolution Cafe (Feb 24th).

Patemm Pad

February 2, 2011

Morning all! Do you feel like functional and fashion oftentimes have nothing to do with one another? Flipping through high end magazines is truly a pleasure for me, but I find myself drifting away from trends. Don’t get me wrong – I love fantastical fashion spreads! But you won’t find me teetering on the sidewalk in platform heels because they’re supposedly stylish or wearing leggings as pants – ever! I’ve made a pact to only shop for the life I lead which means I am always, for example, on the quest for the perfect flats and backback because they actually fit my lifestyle. But it doesn’t mean that I need to relinquish style because I am practical…but it does usually mean I need to search harder for the perfect product.

No one knows this lesson better than new moms who don’t want to give up style but know function comes first. That’s why Shital always gifts Patemm to new moms! Filipino designer Grace Welch found that her young children consumed her life but that a lot of baby didn’t work. The small rectangular shape of diaper changing pads were frustrating because aligning her newborn son in the right position was always a challenge—particularly since he was a rather “wiggly” baby. Even more annoying was the design of the folding/rolling pad that had ties, buttons, or even Velcro®. Grace needed something simple that could fold easily – especially with one hand

Her solution was Patemm! It’s clever round design allows you to place a little one in any direction. The pad stores diapers, wipes, and even a set of clothes in the cleverly-placed inside pockets. When not in use, the pad folds into a compact carrier. Of course, they come in a cute array of pretty patterns and colors, which is a must for the BollyInstyle crew! Shital is also partial to the pitaka (pronounced ‘pe-tah-ka’), which means little purse or pouch that accompanies the pad. They fit perfectly in the larger pocketshold wipes (in a small resealable plastic bag) and small ointments, for example. Apart from the pretty product, I love how Grace notes that a good business solves a problem. Here’s to hoping somebody out there has an alternative to my high school Jansport!

Enjoy! Richa from Mala Handmade

P.S. from Shital: I can’t believe I didn’t share the Patemm with you all sooner. I discovered this once ‘small’ company when I lived in San Francisco. I’m a huge advocate for small businesses and when I read that a like-minded mother was behind this successful venture, my staple gift giving for baby showers became the Patemm Pad!
