New Boutiques to Open From Mumbai to NYC

October 13, 2010

Hi everyone! It’s Richa here again. We’ve had a run of pretty weather in NYC recently, don’t you think? Ample sunshine, clear skies, and a cool breeze made a wonderful companions for a stroll down Madison avenue. I’m not much of an uptown shopper but had to stop in at the new Soigne Kothari boutique. The store is sleek in style with spare, minimal white walls and display cases…all the better to show off the bold Indian styles that Soigne selected for her boutique. The first floor features dresses and separates by contemporary Indian designers including Rohit Gandhi and Rahul Khanna. Bold costume jewelry filled several cases. Upstairs I found a selection of designer saris and other formal Indian wear – if only I had somewhere to go!

It’s wonderful to see Indian fashion taking space on Madison avenue. Shoppers clearly unfamiliar with Indian fashion trickled into the store when I was there and it was nice to hear them appreciate the intricate handiwork of traditional designs but also see the range of contemporary Indian fashion apart from lenghas and cholis. Soigne’s boutique is one of several boutiques coming to NYC this fall. In a few days, Misha Nicole will open its doors. The retail space promises to be more than a place to buy coveted international designers – the press release says that the boutique will also be an event space usable as a platform for social consciousness and home to new, unrepresented designers. I’m very interested to see this concept in action, so a full report is forthcoming dear readers!

Love the contrasts – just my style. I have a thing for purple, but my daughter likes blue, so blue it is.

Fifth Avenue’s First Festival of Lights

September 27, 2010

Morning all! It’s Richa from Mala Handmade. It’s officially fall and though I am a summer gal, there are some things about the cool weather I love…apple cider, fall colors, and … holiday store windows. I always think that the fall and winter store windows are the most inspired ones of the year (no surprise since it’s retails most profitable season). This year, however, I’ve marked my calendar to take a trip by the Louis Vuitton Flagship on the corner of 57th and 5th Avenues here in New York City to check out their Diwali displays.

As Manvi of Mochatini and Women’s Wear Daily report, Louis Vuitton’s holiday windows worldwide will pay homage to India this year, beginning on Diwali (November 5th). Displays will pay tribute to Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights. The holidays is one of India’s important occasions in which participants light traditional diyas, or oil lamps, wear colorful clothes, and eat plenty of sweets. Louis Vuitton has had a longstanding relationship with India and, for their displays, turned to Indian artist Rajeev Sethi to design the windows that will feature lit hand-painted paper trunks. The brand will also introduce limited edition dresses made of vintage sari fabrics. I plan to take some pictures to post for everyone to enjoy!
