Holstee Manifesto

January 25, 2012

Life has been a bit crazy for me lately…(8 week old twins and a toddler:). Shall I say more. It’s always nice to have reminders about the things that are important. That is how I discovered this manifesto poster by Holstee. I eagerly looked up the company and fell in love their story and products. Two brothers, along with a business partner started the company without a business plan in mind but instead created a mantra “This is your LIFE”, which has been seen over 50,000,000 times!

Another meaningful product that caught my attention is Holstee’s Upcycled Wallet. Working with an NGO in India, Holstee came up with a ‘no two alike’ wallet made from recycled plastic bags and newspapers collected from the streets of Delhi.

Check out this video based upon the Manifesto. This video will be part of my new morning routine! Sometimes certain words are so encouraging. Life is all about that. Thank you HOLSTEE.

Anthropologie Film from India

May 12, 2011

Holy Moly! My favorite shop, Anthropologie once again travels to India and as always creates a lovely catalogue but this time, they came back with some gorgeous footage too. No other shop can capture the detail and subtle designs of India as does Anthro. The film is short, sweet, and captivating!

Richa’s Blissful Trip to India

March 15, 2011

Dear readers, I’ve just returned from two blissful weeks in India and excited to share my travels with you! The trip was a mix of family, weddings, and side trips across Rajasthan and Delhi- with plenty of time devoted to gathering inspiration and materials for Mala Handmade and Bollyinstyle, of course. India is the best of both worlds to me: old bazaars filled with timeless traditional treasures and cutting edge boutiques that feature India’s burgeoning high style. My first stop was Jaipur, one of India’s handicraft epicenters. Like Shital, I absolutely love handblock prints, the ancient art of painstakingly handstamping motifs on fabric typically with vegetable dyes. My first stop was Kilol, a gorgeous shop filled with kurtis cut in contemporary styles and stamped with blend of traditional and modern motifs.

If you are also passionate about handblock print clothes, Anokhi and Chhipa are other Jaipur shops stocked with great designs, and the incomparable FabIndia is a must. For the past 50 years, FabIndia has partnered with craftworkers to produce affordable cotton and silk clothes, accessories, and even home goods with a focus on sustainable business practices. Locations are across India and their vast selection filled my suitcase as always with gorgeous gifts of lovely dupattas. Last but not least, Jaipur’s jewelry is top notch. From traditional meenakari designs (tip: try Maniharon alley near Johari bazaar for the best selection) to innovative silver jewelry at the incredible Amrapali flagship at Tholia House in Panch Batti, you can’t turn a corner without finding something you can’t go home without (after you’ve haggled hard for it)!

After touring the jawdropping Mehrangarh fort in Jodhpur, make sure to wander the markets near the clock tower and old blue city bazaar for jodhpuris, or traditional embroidered shoes with vibrant designs I love (I have a rubber sole attached to the bottom to make them last longer). Utterly romantic Udaipur has a maze of lovely stores clustered along Jagdish Mandir road to the City palace. In one of the gorgeous shops in the City Palace complex I discovered Anuradha Ramam, where I couldn’t take my eyes off of her vibrant handblock silk print scarves and tunics. She’s a Delhi based designer with a gorgeous store in New Delhi’s Lodhi Road which is a must-see. By the time I hit Delhi my bags were full, but I dreamt of a larger apartment…that I would decorate with the designs of Good Earth! The three story flagship at City Selectwalk was spectacular and I loved their modern take on traditional designs and new poster series with modern artist Krsna Mehta. India was once again a feast for the senses and I hope you, readers, are ready for spring like me!

Narmada Winery

February 21, 2011

Hi all! We all know that when it comes to fine wine and dining, France always takes home first prize. But never stand in the way of an Indian entrepreneur and his dreams! Pandit Patil spent came to America on scholarship in 1965 and like many immigrants worked a stable science career at the U. S. Department of Energy. But after he retired, he didn’t intend to spend time on the couch; instead, he and his wife Sudha decided to pursue their dream of operating a vineyard and winery. In 1999 they bought over 50 acres of Virginia farmland to get started on their dream and the result is this year’s harvest of 44 tons of grapes this fall, including varieties of Vidal, Traminette, Chambourcin and Chardonnel.

The wine and vineyard is named Narmada after Pandit’s mother, the vineyard will produce nearly 3,000 cases of its 2009 wines with plans for expansion, including space for wine tastings. As reported in The Rappahannock Voice, one wine is called Mom. It’s an off-dry white made of 100% Chardonnel grapes, that Pandit and Sudha call “a tribute to the owner’s mother and to all out there for all the sacrifices that you make.” It’s a storybook ending befitting a longstanding immigrant dream!

For the Love of Block Printing

February 9, 2011

I’m sure by now you can tell the LOVE we have for block printing. After taking a letterpress class, I gained much appreciation for each letterpress print I see. The time consuming process that goes into each intricate design is similar to the methods used in completing woodblocks for block printing. Home decor retailer, West Elm recently visited the ‘best of the best’ block printing artisans in Rajasthan and created a short film about the entire process. Check it out here.
