Manish Arora iPad Cases

November 15, 2012

I know that having an iPad has definitely changed the way that I interact with the internet and various forms of media. It’s great that it is so light to carry around, that the screen is big enough to follow recipes on in the kitchen, that it is easy to use to catch a show on the couch when I get a chance. Plus, it makes emails and blog management a breeze, for times when the iPhone just won’t cut it. Obviously it is important to keep investments like an iPad protected, so cases are a must. There are many cases available—from the tasteless and boring to the minimal and sleek. And then, there are the lavish, statement making cases like those from Manish Arora.

Well known and loved for his vibrant designs, Arora’s influence is no longer confined to the worlds of art and fashion: he has also put out a line of iPad cases.

Arora’s recent unveiling of iPad case designs with his 2013 Spring Collection at Paris Fashion Week delighted tech-loving fashionistas everywhere. Arora is often called India’s John Galliano for his dedication to motifs in bright colors mixed with traditional Indian elements like appliqué. His fans include pop star Lady Gaga and international supermodel Heidi Klum, who will surely be spotted using his embellished iPad cases soon.

The saying ‘go big or go home’ definitely applies here: Arora’s iPad cases aren’t for the faint of heart, but are definitely show-stopping eye-catchers.

Would you feel comfortable sporting a case like this, or do you prefer something quieter for your tech covers?

Pondicherry Shop

November 15, 2012

Time sure is flying by! How is the holiday season already upon us? Seems like we were enjoying summertime pool parties and movies on the lawn just a week or two ago. Well, as you continue looking for gifts and ways to decorate your home (and yourself!), add Pondicherry to your list of must-visit shopping sites.

With covetable gifts, jewelry, accessories, and apparel, Pondicherry superbly sources ‘fusion design’ from across the globe. Launched just this spring, Pondicherry offers items inspired by the colors, patterns, mystery, and heritage of India and other areas of South Asia.

The clothes on Pondicherry range from comfortable and cute loungewear to classy and chic dresses that work for a variety of occasions. There are pleasing candle holders, lanterns, and pillows with which to decorate your home or gift the hostess of the next soiree you attend. And… I’m pretty sure everyone can find a scarf, bag, or piece of jewelry that perfectly suits their unique tastes and personality. Plus, Pondicherry is revealing, bit by bit, a line of illustrated bags, t-shirts, and prints!

I think we can all agree that it can be difficult sometimes to keep traditions alive with the influx of distractions nowadays: busier schedules, and the ability to be in constant communication with pretty much everyone. I find it great that Pondicherry really strives to connect people with modern pieces that carry traditional elements. The items all channel rich heritage in a new light and aesthetic.

What are your favorite ways to keep in touch with your heritage in your day-to-day life?

Funk.licious

October 19, 2011

Hi everyone! Richa from MalaHandmade here with a love letter to Funk.licious, an amazing line of funky home furnishings that I adore. Back in early spring, I wrote about moving being inspired by a recent trip to India and the amazing style of Good Earth, one of India’s audacious new design stores. My husband literally had to pry my hands off of the pop art inspired pieces throughout the store: graphic scenes of Bollywood heroines silk screened onto bedspreads and trays, tea sets with kitschy quotes. I had absolutely no space left in my packed luggage for another funky cushion, no matter now: Funka.licious to the rescue!

Self described as kitsch, retro, pop, colorful, and unconventional, the line’s punchy cushion covers are a lot of fun. Bollywood images are collaged on top of traditional paisley motifs for a majority of designs, making this the perfect accent piece for Bollywood lovers among you. I’m love with the pictures of old Maharajas with stars in their eyes, which would be a great conversation piece. It’s fun to browse through the designs and pick out a favorite, but a few of you might be wondering how to actually incorporate such a bold piece into your home. I’ve found that these pieces are best used sparingly to pack the best punch – as the lone accent pillow for a side chair, or the focus in a group of other colorful pillows. I also really love really bold pieces like this set against white and other light colors. Share tips for how you incorporate Indian pop art into your homes in the comments below!

What are your favorite Go2 shops that carry products of Indian origins? We see it all around us…A little piece of India, from block-printing to paisley and lovely incense and candles – something for every room.  I did a quick roundup of my favorite retailers carrying asian-inspired goodies in home decor. Enjoy!

P.S. I found these roti rolling pins via a wonderful blog by Sundeep at Designwali. So creative!!!!

Reinvent Old Saris

November 17, 2010

Dear readers, a blog isn’t probably the best way to make a confession, but here goes anyways….Mom: you always had your suspicions about what I did with that green sari you gave me…it’s time for you to know it’s fate involved my hands and scissors! Readers, can some of you can relate to the dubious fate of some of my beautiful Indian textiles? Saris, in their six meters long glory of embroidered and bedazzled design, often sit unworn in my closet. And until I find myself living a life of glamorous Indo parties, these gorgeous textiles are often relegated to a suitcase stuffed in the back of my closet until a friend gets married. But I would love nothing more for these pretty fabrics to see the light of day. That’s where Maxine Dillon comes in!

Maxine’s handbags are billed as reconstructed apparel and accessories that transform the nature of discarded garments by crafting them into wearable handbags. There are two styles on the website: the smaller, original pouch purse and larger bucket bag. A few of available styles already look like they are made from sari fabric; Maxine can also create a custom bag for you out of your own material provided that it’s a suitably thick – this option is listed under her “Send me your Jacket” link on the site where Maxine gives $10 off a pouch purse if you provide your own fabric from an already constructed piece. A think sari would definitely make a cute pouch piece, which means avoid light silk chiffon and go for a thicker weave like a Kanjeevaram* instead. With a custom pouch purse in hand, you’ll actually get to make use of a gorgeous textile on a daily basis. If only I had some of that green sari fabric left!

*Special note: I deliberately use the word “like” a kanjeevaram since this beautiful, traditional saree of unbelievable handwoven artistry is endangered, so I can’t bear to see one cut up!
