Funk.licious
October 19, 2011Hi everyone! Richa from MalaHandmade here with a love letter to Funk.licious, an amazing line of funky home furnishings that I adore. Back in early spring, I wrote about moving being inspired by a recent trip to India and the amazing style of Good Earth, one of India’s audacious new design stores. My husband literally had to pry my hands off of the pop art inspired pieces throughout the store: graphic scenes of Bollywood heroines silk screened onto bedspreads and trays, tea sets with kitschy quotes. I had absolutely no space left in my packed luggage for another funky cushion, no matter now: Funka.licious to the rescue!

Self described as kitsch, retro, pop, colorful, and unconventional, the line’s punchy cushion covers are a lot of fun. Bollywood images are collaged on top of traditional paisley motifs for a majority of designs, making this the perfect accent piece for Bollywood lovers among you. I’m love with the pictures of old Maharajas with stars in their eyes, which would be a great conversation piece. It’s fun to browse through the designs and pick out a favorite, but a few of you might be wondering how to actually incorporate such a bold piece into your home. I’ve found that these pieces are best used sparingly to pack the best punch – as the lone accent pillow for a side chair, or the focus in a group of other colorful pillows. I also really love really bold pieces like this set against white and other light colors. Share tips for how you incorporate Indian pop art into your homes in the comments below!

Retail Roundup
February 8, 2011What are your favorite Go2 shops that carry products of Indian origins? We see it all around us…A little piece of India, from block-printing to paisley and lovely incense and candles – something for every room. I did a quick roundup of my favorite retailers carrying asian-inspired goodies in home decor. Enjoy!
P.S. I found these roti rolling pins via a wonderful blog by Sundeep at Designwali. So creative!!!!

Reinvent Old Saris
November 17, 2010
Dear readers, a blog isn’t probably the best way to make a confession, but here goes anyways….Mom: you always had your suspicions about what I did with that green sari you gave me…it’s time for you to know it’s fate involved my hands and scissors! Readers, can some of you can relate to the dubious fate of some of my beautiful Indian textiles? Saris, in their six meters long glory of embroidered and bedazzled design, often sit unworn in my closet. And until I find myself living a life of glamorous Indo parties, these gorgeous textiles are often relegated to a suitcase stuffed in the back of my closet until a friend gets married. But I would love nothing more for these pretty fabrics to see the light of day. That’s where Maxine Dillon comes in!
Maxine’s handbags are billed as reconstructed apparel and accessories that transform the nature of discarded garments by crafting them into wearable handbags. There are two styles on the website: the smaller, original pouch purse and larger bucket bag. A few of available styles already look like they are made from sari fabric; Maxine can also create a custom bag for you out of your own material provided that it’s a suitably thick – this option is listed under her “Send me your Jacket” link on the site where Maxine gives $10 off a pouch purse if you provide your own fabric from an already constructed piece. A think sari would definitely make a cute pouch piece, which means avoid light silk chiffon and go for a thicker weave like a Kanjeevaram* instead. With a custom pouch purse in hand, you’ll actually get to make use of a gorgeous textile on a daily basis. If only I had some of that green sari fabric left!
*Special note: I deliberately use the word “like” a kanjeevaram since this beautiful, traditional saree of unbelievable handwoven artistry is endangered, so I can’t bear to see one cut up!

Diaper Darlings
November 2, 2010
Dear readers, I’ve reached a pivotal moment in my life: that time when everyone I know is pregnant. I’ll bet a lot of you know what I mean – it’s the age when people with whom you shared high school dramas, college all-nighters, backpacking adventures, and first job jitters…all of a sudden are bringing another life into the world! So the intrepid researchers of Bollyinstyle have made fashion for parents today’s mission and found the next “it” bag: Baby Kaed.
Designer Lavinia started her line after searching high and low for the perfect, all-encompassing tote that was multi-functional, stylish, and didn’t scream “diaper bag!” Her roomy bags are adorable, with a range of styles that includes metallics, quilted leather, and backpacks. Lavinia’s most frequently asked question is how she names the bags. Her first design was named after her firstborn son, Kaed, and thereafter she’s used her family for inspiration: Aviu is the way Kaed used to say I love you; Jacey is Kaed’s little brother; Shanti means peace; Shyla is the name we would have named Jace if he had popped out a girl….

Importantly, Lavinia’s “Dali” design is for dads! Professional enough for work, the bag mixes the laptop compartment with a pacifier pouch and changing mat. And the line has definitely caught the celebrity eye – there’s Kenda Wilkinson with the Shanti tote on US Weekly – but it’s Lavinia’s humor that’s the best. When describing the growth of her company, she says that both Baby Kaed and it’s namesake are no longer babies: both the kid and company are now a little more than 5 years old. Recently, Kaed became a big brother and “there I was again with the leaky boobs, spit up, and poopy diaper” – all in a day’s work for this CEO mom.
Happy baby shopping,
Richa, Mala Handmade

Fifth Avenue’s First Festival of Lights
September 27, 2010Morning all! It’s Richa from Mala Handmade. It’s officially fall and though I am a summer gal, there are some things about the cool weather I love…apple cider, fall colors, and … holiday store windows. I always think that the fall and winter store windows are the most inspired ones of the year (no surprise since it’s retails most profitable season). This year, however, I’ve marked my calendar to take a trip by the Louis Vuitton Flagship on the corner of 57th and 5th Avenues here in New York City to check out their Diwali displays.
As Manvi of Mochatini and Women’s Wear Daily report, Louis Vuitton’s holiday windows worldwide will pay homage to India this year, beginning on Diwali (November 5th). Displays will pay tribute to Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights. The holidays is one of India’s important occasions in which participants light traditional diyas, or oil lamps, wear colorful clothes, and eat plenty of sweets. Louis Vuitton has had a longstanding relationship with India and, for their displays, turned to Indian artist Rajeev Sethi to design the windows that will feature lit hand-painted paper trunks. The brand will also introduce limited edition dresses made of vintage sari fabrics. I plan to take some pictures to post for everyone to enjoy!
