Eastern Mystic Inspiration
July 29, 2010
Hi everyone! It’s Richa from Malahandmade and I’m back today with another international jewelry designer that Bollyinstyle labels as a designer on the rise: Sonal Talgeri-Bhaskaran, the London-based designer behind Eastern Mystic jewelry. Her line is just shy of its first anniverary but has already won the Treasure Competition with her handmade beaded creations. Her current collection (which is on sale!) is right on point with summer trends: for example, the triple strand Jalkari Tavashi stone necklaces in the Indali collection can dress up an easy summer dress for evening with bold color. Some bracelets come in multistrand creations that mix large and small stones for a fun, chunky look. It’s also nice to see that Bhaskaran’s collections have a lot of gold mixed in with natural stones (she uses fairtrade 24 karat gold vermeil). Sterling silver has been reigning supreme for some time now and the use of gold is not only a nice compliment to summer skin, but also invokes India which is where the designer finds inspiration. BollyInstyle’s favorites are pieces from the Indira and Malika collection.

I’m always drawn to designers who are self-taught, like Bhaskaran, and came to their design careers from a non-tradiional route. In this case, Bhaskaran came to jewelry after the rigors of a high-profile corporate job and her father’s death prompted her to pursue her passion for jewelry. She focused on what she knew and liked – her Indian heritage (each piece has a unique Indian name) – and found success pursuing what she truly loved to do. Her pieces might not just accessorize your outfit, but inspire you to stay creative!

Come Sit Stay Play
July 28, 2010I spent some time on our backyard swing yesterday with a few friends and kiddies and realized how wonderful and relaxing a swing can be inside or outside a home. In India, swings or ‘jhoolas’ are a MUST inside the home. I love love love having a nice swing to kill some time in the warm and sunny weather.
After flipping through home magazines and websites, I’ve put together a lovely roundup of ‘tradmod’ jhoolas! You’ll want to put one in every room of the house!
I found this beautiful DIY porch swing via Remodelista. It’s simple, modern and inviting. However, you can also spice it up by upholstering the cushions using bold bohemian prints. Visit Remodelista to find out how you can make your own.

I love the jhoolas. I am moving into an apartment next month–any tips on where I can find a jhoola that doesn’t have to go into the ceiling?

I agree–jhoolas are a great idea. I loved swinging when I was a little girl, and the idea of having one inside is wonderful. Thanks for the link!

A Modern Maharani’s Jewlerybox
July 27, 2010I’m so excited to have my talented friend Richa as a guest blogger today. She’s the ‘crafty’ gal behind Mala Handmade ~ jewelry inspired by India, crafted by hand!
I’m not exactly sure how Richa and I met in blogland, but we’ve exchanged ideas and fell in love with each others creative endeavors. The community in our little corner of the blogsphere is really an amazing, interesting and supportive group of people. Chatting with Richa reminds me of why this is all so much fun.

Here’s a sneak peak of Richa’s jewlery at Mala Handmade. Can’t wait for the online shop to open. I will be first to grab the earth tone beaded necklace, part of the varanasi collection! Welcome, Richa.

A Modern Maharani’s Jewlerybox
Hi, everyone! I’m Richa from Mala Handmade and I am thrilled to begin guestblogging for Bollyinstyle. I’m a writer and jewelry designer based in New York City – but most importantly, I’m passionate about Asian-inspired design, which makes this collaboration fun. Growing up, I loved to flip through magazines and get lost in fantastical images of fashion and decoration that inspired me to dream…which leads me to the jewelry of Jenny Manik Mercian. At the tender age of 31, the work of this award-winning Australia based jewelry designer (whose middle name Manic Merhcain means precious gem in Singalese) has done the impossible: conquered couture, been coveted by celebrities, and collaborated with one of the world’s most commercially successful brands, Victoria’s Secret.
Mercian began making jewelry as a hobby but a glance at her portfolio shows why her work found an instant following: her handcrafted creations are large scale works of jewelry art. A bejeweled corset, bone and diamond choker, and crystal encrusted halter top are examples of bold, unabashed bling. It’s no wonder lingerie giant Victoria’s Secret continually relies on Mercian to create it’s signature angel wings each season since Mercian’s creations blend seamlessly into the brand’s image of luxurious fantasy.

You can find Mercian’s work at high-end retailers like London’s tony Harvey Nichol’s (as well as on celebrity clients like Heidi Klum and Tyra Banks). I’ll probably always have to window shop her creations – but I still find Mercian’s work important. Why? For the same reason it’s fun to look at holiday windows at Barneys, costumes at the Victoria and Albert museum, or Vogue: it opens my eyes to a new way to style those accessories that are accessible to me and urges me to stay creative in a in our mass-consumer society. I hope Mercian’s work inspires you to find your inner modern maharani!
